BFD: You have been in China for several months now... Have you adapted well living in this enormous country?
Al: Yes, I have been in China for a while and I have been to several cities. China is a very interesting place. The people are friendly and there is very little crime... even though there are 1.3 Billion people living here. I love the history of China. There are a lot of beautiful places over here that have much history attached. I am very comfortable being here. I am even learning to speak a little Chinese!
BFD: To help us locate you on the map, where are you staying?
Al: I am staying in Beijing... the capital. Last week we went to Anshan, Benshi, and Fushin to play the Australian National team.
BFD: What is the biggest difference you see between the U.S. and China?
Al: There are several things... food, the number of people, the types of stores, transportation (a lot of bikes). I ride to and from work on a bike. When they have a meal over here, it is a major thing. It will take at least an hour. Things are brought out in pieces. They are put on a Lazy Susan and it is rolled around and around... and you pick up stuff you want to eat as it passes. They use chop sticks, not fork and knifes. I am very good with chop sticks...
BFD: What exactly are you doing while in China? Who are you working with?
Al: I am the strength coach for the Chinese Woman’s Basketball team. I am doing similar to what we do with our Ellite Athlete program back in the U.S. I have done camps for the Junior Boys and Girls National Basketball teams.
BFD: How do you communicate with the athletes?
Al: Right now I have a translator, but I use some Chinese. Plus, I demonstrate and grunt if I do not have an interpreter.
BFD: Thanks Al!
Al: No problem Bubba.
